Turn an Android Phone Into an SMS Gateway (And Get Paid for It)
A spare Android phone and a SIM with coverage can earn money as an SMS gateway node. How Android SMS gateways work, what they earn, and how Koipabo routes OTP traffic through them.
What is an Android SMS gateway?
An Android SMS gateway is a phone that sends text messages on behalf of software. An app runs on the device, listens for send requests from the internet, and submits them through the SIM's normal messaging channel. To the mobile network, it looks like a person texting — which is why delivery rates are high and why no carrier contracts are needed.
Run one phone for your own projects and you have a private SMS gateway for nearly zero cost. Connect many phones to a shared pool and you have a network that can deliver OTP codes anywhere a supplier has coverage.
How Koipabo's pooled model works
Suppliers install the Koipabo Gateway app on an Android phone with an active SIM. The app pairs to their account with a device token, reports which country the SIM serves, and heartbeats every couple of minutes. When a customer anywhere in the world sends an OTP to a number in that country, the platform routes the message to an online device whose SIM matches the destination and pays the supplier 70% of the message price for every delivered SMS.
Routing is country-aware end to end: a message to a Swedish number can only ever go out through a SIM that actually serves Sweden. Devices that cannot detect their SIM country are held out of the pool until the supplier sets their coverage manually, and phones with stale heartbeats are auto-paused so customer traffic never hits a dead handset.
What a supplier actually earns
Earnings depend on how much traffic routes through your country and how often your device is online. Every delivered message pays you 70% of the retail price — at the default $0.005 rate that is $0.0035 per SMS, paid into your supplier balance as messages deliver.
The practical setup: an old phone, a charger, and a SIM plan with cheap or unlimited SMS. Put it on Wi-Fi, keep it plugged in, and it earns while it sits in a drawer. Suppliers can set their own ask rate, see per-device delivery stats, and request payouts to mobile wallet, bank transfer, or crypto whenever they want.
- 70% of the message price for every delivered SMS
- Set your own ask rate per device
- Payouts via mobile wallet, bank account, or crypto
- Delivery stats per device: sent, delivered, failed, skipped
Getting started
Create a supplier account, download the Koipabo Gateway app on the device you want to pool, and pair it with the code shown in your dashboard. The app asks for SMS permissions because that is the entire job: it sends verification texts through your SIM when the platform routes them to you. Your phone number is never exposed to customers — they only see the platform.
If you run a business that sends OTPs rather than a phone in a drawer, the same network works for you as a customer: sign up, top up $10, and send your first message in minutes.
